… at least according to the food banks in the Twin Cities metro area.
Now I am all for food banks. I love them! It puts charity where it belongs, in the private sector. We need more food banks and less food stamps. However, it is a bit ironic that rather than complaining that there isn't enough food to meet the need, they are complaining about what kind of food is being donated. That tells me that we have officially won the war on poverty! When people have to eat chicken noodle soup rather than African fufu, it must mean that everyone is at least eating.
Many of the foods on their wishlist aren't even available in the part of town that I live in. Or if they are, I haven't been seeing them. I wouldn't know where to find fufu, white gourd juice, or fish sauce. I also have no desire to drive in to the hippie food co-ops in North Minneapolis (not exactly the safest part of town) just to please the people benefitting from the food shelves. I also have no desire whatsoever to buy meat certified by the Muslim community. If they don't want to eat the cream of mushroom soup I donated, they are free to try their hand at panhandling.
